Questions, questions

When you're just getting started in your career you're bound to have a million and one questions on your mind. We've given our answers to the most frequently asked ones. If you have a burning question that isn't here, please email us at graduate.team@gva.co.uk

  • Q. What are your minimum academic requirements?

    A. Please see Apply

  • Q. I don't meet your minimum academic requirements. Will I be rejected automatically?

    A. We will consider your application, and you'll have the chance to tell us of any extenuating circumstances.

  • Q. I would like to apply for a graduate position but my degree is not RICS or RTPI accredited. Can I still apply?

    A. We welcome applications from graduates from a non-property related background, although you will need to demonstrate you have a passion for property. You will need to apply via the pathway you feel suits your skills and interests best – be it Commercial Surveying, Building Surveying, Planning and Development Surveying or Planning. You will be expected to undertake a RICS or RTPI Masters conversion course while you're with us. Please note that applications where a relevant undergraduate or Postgraduate degree is evident will usually be favoured over non-cognate applications.

  • Q. I have a disability. Will this affect my application?

    A. We treat all applications fairly, irrespective of their actual or assumed background. We ask that you provide details of your disability on the application form so that we may adapt the application process to best suit your needs.

  • Q. Can I apply for more than one programme?

    A. No, so please take the time to decide which RICS or RTPI pathway is most suited to you and your skills.

  • Q. Can I choose where I'm based?

    A. You can indicate three locations in order of preference on the application form. There is also a 'no preference' option if you are open to working in any location. Whatever programme you decide upon, the more flexible you are the better.

  • Q. Do I need to prove that I have the current right to work in the UK?

    A. Yes. You will need to provide us with as much details as you can regarding your right to work in the UK on the application form.

  • Q. I graduated from University a few years ago. Can I still apply for a graduate position?

    A. Our programmes are open to all graduates, regardless of when you graduated.

  • Q. Should I include all of my work experience, or just property related experience on my application form?

    A. Although we do look favourably on property related work experience we are also interested in any other experience where you have gained transferable skills, such as team working, customer service and organisation skills. So, please include all work experience that you feel demonstrates any useful skills, not just property experience.

  • Q. What is the deadline for online applications?

    A. Please see Apply

  • Q. What happens after I have submitted my application form?

    A. Your application will be reviewed by a member of our graduate team. If you meet our initial requirements you'll be asked to complete online tests. Please refer to the Apply page to find out more.

  • Q. Can I defer my entry for a year?

    A. No, you would need to re-apply next year if you wished to be considered for the following intake.

  • Q. How long does the graduate development programme last?

    A. Each one is different, so check out the RICS and RTPI websites for further information on the minimum timescales that apply. In general it takes a minimum of 2 years supervised practice to be eligible to sit for the APC.

  • Q. If I am offered a graduate position, when will I start?

    A. Generally speaking, graduates join us in September each year. However if there are any opportunities for you to start earlier, we will contact you to discuss this.

  • Q. My email and / or postal address has changed - what can I do?

    A. After submitting your application you can still change your email address. Simply log into the system with the email address and password you used to register and click on "update contact details" on the toolbar.

  • Q. I have accidentally applied for the wrong pathway - what can I do?

    A. Please email graduate.team@gva.co.uk detailing your name and candidate number and the change you need to make.

  • Q. Can I apply for a summer work placement if I previously applied for the Graduate training scheme?

    A. Yes. You can find this option when you are logged into your GVA account (to log in go through the Apply tab). The option to apply is visble from the bottom of the screen.

  • Q. Can I apply for a year out placement if I previously applied for the graduate scheme?

    A. No, unfortunately you are only eligible to apply to the year out placement vacancies if a placement forms part of your university degree.
